Bayer Leverkusen v Barcelona Betting Tips and Bet Preview

Bayer Leverkusen find themselves needing to win to ensure progress to the next round of the competition, whilst Barcelona are already there. That doesn’t change the fact this will be an extremely tough game for the home side, and they’ll be looking to win for only the second time since the sides last met eight games ago.

Bayer lead for Barcelona for a long time on that evening before goals from Sergi Roberto and Luis Suarez in the final 10 minutes turned the game on it’s head. These two sides have had differing fortunes since then, with the German side struggling.

The Catalan side had scored 26 goals en-route to six straight wins prior to their weekend draw in Valencia, but they’re still winners of 11 of their last 13 games, including a 4-0 romp away to rivals Real Madrid.

The fact that Barcelona have already qualified from (and won) this group is clearly a big factor in the bookmakers pricing, because evens would seem generous at a glance. Given the current form of the two sides, I think it still is.

Bayer do have a very strong home record in Europe overall, but it’s always key to note the level of competition. The fact that they’ve beaten the likes of Lazio, Zenit and Benfica is impressive, but it’s not a head turner. Leverkusen have lost nine of their last 11 games when facing a side ranked in Europe’s Top 10. Barcelona most definitely fit that description.

There’s still no reason why the hosts can’t dig deep and pull a surprise out of the bag, but I feel Barcelona are too strong going forward and whatever the hosts do, the visitors could have a reply. One thing you absolutely cannot label ‘strong’ is Barcelona’s defence. They do concede goals.

Going all the way back to 2000 Barcelona have conceded in 60% of their Champions League away games (51 of 85) and it goes a long way to reflecting the strong of the competition. Keeping clean sheets is something Barcelona have never done that regularly.

We’ve talked about varying level of competitions, but we must consider that the hosts have scored in all five games this season. The lowest scoring of those was a 1-1 draw with Bate, but the remaining games have featured at least three goals, with their home games so far producing 4-1 and 4-4 scoreline. They’ll be confident that can score goals.

Leverkusen have netted in 18 of 21 UCL games at home, all seven of their meetings with Barcelona and 26 of 29 domestically on this ground. Barcelona have scored at least twice in eight of their last nine away games.

The home side have absolutely nothing to lose in attacking their visitors in an attempt to qualify, and Barcelona themselves will be able to relax and play their own game. I expect plenty of goals this evening.
